Split
Venice was the departure port for our tour by small ship on the lovely Aegean Odyssey. The itinerary included 3 ports in Croatia, followed by 2 in Sicily, then Sorrento and the nearby archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii, and finished in Rome.
Our first Croatian port, Split, was fascinating for its location, architecture, and ambiance. Although, it is the largest city on the Dalmatian coast, we concentrated entirely on the expansive palace complex built by Roman emperor Diocletian in preparation for his retirement in 305 AD. Today the structures of this monumental UNESCO World Heritage Site house museums, religious buildings, and a thriving town of shops and restaurants.
