Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik was our third and final port of call in Croatia. The visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands out for several reasons. The fortified old city still retains its walls, which run almost 2km around the historic center. They are accessible for a nominal fee and provide a great view of the port and old and new cities. Few of Dubrovnik's early buildings survived the earthquake of 1667 and, due to the subsequent rebuilding, the historic center is much more uniform in layout, architectural style and building materials than most cities of a similar age. The result is an almost Disneyesque Baroque town, which was a pleasure to explore. The weather system that followed us from Italy punctuated our visit to Dubrovnik with drizzle, brilliant sun, dramatic clouds and skies, drenching downpours, and a beautiful sunset.
