Bird watching, cultural travel, and photography have taken my wife and me to six continents
and over fifty countries. Exploring the world has also helped me greater appreciate the
diversity and unique beauty of our home in Grapevine, Texas.
I currently offer classes through the Southlake and Grapevine Parks and Recreation
Departments, private classes on request, and at Westlake Academy and Clariden
Montessori.
My work is featured in several local publications and on a number of websites.

Bruce Rosenstiel, Small World Photos Biography & Gear

When my wife declared she was done photographing our
vacations, I decided to experiment with a manual SLR
attached to my birding scope. Twenty years as a birder had
already taught me to slow down and observe the details of
my surroundings and had led to an interest in nature overall,
so I naturally focused the camera on flowers, insects,
butterflies, and all manner of flora and fauna.
With greater experience, I became more interested in the
details of composition, lighting, and photographing different
subjects. Though initially reluctant to photograph people
because it seemed too intrusive, I now especially enjoy the
challenge of capturing an expression, mood, or perspective
in candid portraits.

I currently use Canon cameras, lenses, extenders, extension tubes, and 500D magnifying filter.
Specifically, I use the Canon 5D Mark II with the Canon 24-105 mm f/4 lens or Canon 16 - 35 mm
f/2.8 lens for landscapes and portraits. I particularly like the full-frame sensor with the wide angle
lenses to get the most from what is in front of me. I combine the Canon 7D with the version II
70-200 mm f/2.8 IS USM lens, the 2.0X Extender, various length extension tubes and the 500D
magnifying filter depending on the subject matter and my intent for the image. I can use the
70-200mm alone for portraits, street scenes, etc.. I can add the 2.0X extender to increase my
reach to 400mm. I can add the 500D to render ultra-sharp macro images. If I can't get close
enough to use the 500D, I can use various length extension tubes. This components give me a
great deal of flexibility without the weight and bulk of additional lenses.
To carry my gear I use the Think Tank belt and bag system. The digital holsters are perfect for the
camera and lens combinations. Their other bags are great for carrying additional lens and
accessories. To check out or purchase the Think Tank family of products click here.
I also highly recommend the Hoodman eye loupe and eye cover to improve your ability to see your
through your view finder and to view your LCD panel.
